Wolsey Farm

A small but growing dexter cattle farm...

A Bit About Dexter's...

Of course one look into their eyes and your heart melts with adornment. Then you scratch them under their chin and they show their appreciation with that long stretched neck and maybe a cuddle.
As with all large animals caution prevails - but there is something about a Dexter that lets you know they are unique.

Dexter Cattle originated in Ireland and were introduced to England in the late 1800's. The first Dexters came to America around the early 1900's.
They are compact in size and unique in that they are dual purpose for both quality beef and good milk yield with around 4% butterfat. Their compact size and ability to withstand the hottest of summers and coldest of winters make them a desirable breed for smaller land owners wanting their own herd. The smaller size of the Dexter also makes them a more manageable breed physically. And when hand raised they can become a real "pet" - but as with all animals - using caution and common sense.
Both Dexter cows and bulls have horns. The horns are typically milky white in color with blackish tips. Dehorning is acceptable in the breed. Ideal cows range in size between 36" and 42". Bulls average between 38" and 44" at the shoulder. Dexter Cattle are black, dun, or red in color.
